United States Ambassador at Large Nomination of W. Beverly Carter, It.

The President today announced that he will nominate W. Beverly Carter, Jr., of Philadelphia, Pa., to be Ambassador at Large. He would have overall responsibility for liaison with State and local governments for the State Department.

Carter, 57, is currently Ambassador to Liberia. He joined the Foreign Service in 1965 and served as a public affairs officer in Nairobi and Lagos. From 1969 to 1972, he was Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs.

From 1972 to 1975, Carter was Ambassador to Tanzania. From 1975 to 1976, he was special assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. Since 1976 he has been Ambassador to Liberia.
