Statement of Administration Policy: S. Res. 195 - Request for Information on El Salvador's Human Rights Practices
STATEMENT OF ADMINISTRATION POLICY
(Senate)
(Sen. Kaine, D-VA, and 13 cosponsors)
The Administration strongly opposes S. Res. 195, a resolution requesting information on El Salvador's human rights practices. Pursuant to section 502B(c) of the Foreign Assistance Act, passage of the resolution would require the Department of State to produce a report on El Salvador.
The Administration praises President Bukele's leadership in the region and the example he sets for other nations in the Western Hemisphere. President Bukele transformed El Salvador from a nation on the brink of collapse into a beacon of hope by implementing bold security measures, reducing crime, and fostering economic growth, restoring peace, safety, and prosperity for its people.
El Salvador is a key partner in stopping illegal immigration and cracking down on transnational gangs. S. Res. 195 is misguided and could harm a significant bilateral relationship in the region. Unlike other nations that have historically received foreign aid from the United States, El Salvador is in alignment with America's foreign policy and national security goals. The resolution's adoption by the Senate would negatively affect our national security interests and the President's efforts to protect the safety and security of the American people.
