The President today announced that he will nominate Roberta S. Karmel, of New York, to be a member of the Securities and Exchange Commission. She would replace A. A. Sommer, Jr. Karmel is a partner in the New York law firm of Rogers & Wells and an adjunct professor at Brooklyn Law School.
She was born May 4, 1937, in Chicago, Ill. She received a B.A. from Radcliffe College in 1959 and an LL.B. from New York University School of Law in 1962.
From 1962 to 1969, Karmel worked for the Securities and Exchange Commission, as an attorney, then attorney branch chief, then Assistant Regional Administrator. From 1969 to 1972, she was an associate with Willkie, Farr & Gallagher in New York.
Karmel has been a partner with Rogers & Wells since 1972, and an adjunct professor at Brooklyn Law School since 1973. She has been a member of the American Bar Association Committee on Securities Regulation since 1973. She has also served on the New York City Bar Association's Committee on Securities Regulation and Committee on Administrative Law, and is presently on its Committee on Professional Responsibility.
She is the author of numerous articles in legal journals.
