Sanders Campaign Press Release - SEA/SEIU Local 1984, New Hampshire's 2nd Largest Union, Endorses Bernie Sanders for President

January 12, 2020

CONCORD, N.H. – SEA/SEIU Local 1984, New Hampshire's second largest union with over 10,000 public and private sector members, today endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders for president following the recommendation of the Political Education Committee. SEA/SEIU Local 1984 will be hosting a press conference to announce the endorsement with campaign representatives at 12:15 PM on Monday, January 13.

Sen. Sanders has long been the candidate of the working class and organized labor, recently completing a New Hampshire Worker Appreciation Tour and standing with SEA/SEIU Local 1984 in their struggle for fair wages and a fair contract.

"I'm honored to receive SEA/SEIU Local 1984's support today," said Sen. Sanders. "The labor movement helped build the middle class in this country, and strong unions are key to reviving it today. As president, I'll continue to stand on the side of workers and unions like SEA/SEIU 1984 in the fight for a fair and just economy that works for all of us."

This decision comes at a critical time for SEA/SEIU Local 1984 as they continue to fight for fair pay and a fair contract, a right that Governor Sununu is working to deny New Hampshire's state employees. Sen. Sanders has supported the union in their efforts and joined them in a rally last month as part of the End Corporate Greed in New Hampshire tour.

"For decades, Senator Sanders has represented the interests of workers all across this country, and during these past few months, he has taken the time to support SEA/SEIU Local 1984 specifically," said Rich Gulla, SEA/SEIU Local 1984 President since 2014 and proud union member since 1999. "Just recently, when he learned of the struggles that New Hampshire state employees who are without a contract are facing he called a press conference to tell Governor Sununu to treat workers with respect. We know American workers can count on him. We are proud to endorse Sen. Sanders for president."

Originally formed in 1940, SEA/SEIU 1984 has been the voice of state workers across New Hampshire for decades. Today, SEA/SEIU 1984 represents worker rights in nearly 30 collective bargaining units across New Hampshire, with membership spanning across sectors including highway maintenance workers, nurses, human services workers, corrections and law enforcement officers, and both full-time and part-time faculty and staff.

SEA/SEIU 1984 is the second state-wide New Hampshire union to endorse Sen. Sanders for president after American Postal Workers Union (APWU) of New Hampshire. Today's endorsement follows those from other major labor groups including the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), National Nurses United (NNU), Boston Independent Drivers Guild (BIDG), United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE), and National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW).

A strong, unwavering advocate for unions across all sectors, Sen. Sanders has the most thorough and extensive plan of any presidential hopeful to strengthen the rights of American workers and the labor movement, laid out in his Workplace Democracy Plan.
