President Obama spoke today by phone with Amir Tamim bin Hamad al Thani of Qatar. Regarding the situation in Syria, they reaffirmed the importance of close cooperation to establish the conditions for a successful political transition. They also committed to continue support for the moderate Syrian opposition and to engage constructively in the talks in Vienna planned for October 30, building on the discussions last week among Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Russia, and the United States. Regarding Libya, the President and Amir Tamim underscored their support for the negotiations facilitated by the United Nations. Separately, the President and Amir Tamim committed to sustain joint efforts against ISIL and other terrorist groups, including by expanding cooperation to counter terrorist financing. They agreed to remain in close contact on these and related issues.
