WH in-town pool reporter #2 Secret Service orders press inside At about 11:30 am EDT, a Secret Service official ordered reporters on the North Lawn – including everyone working on Pebble Beach – to go inside the White House press briefing room. No reason was provided. A Secret Service official now appears to be walking on the North Lawn. Several reporters including me were waiting outside to speak to Education Secretary Linda McMahon, who was giving an interview on Fox News, when the order came. I will let you know when I get more inflation. |
July 15, 2025 11:59 |
WH in-town pool report #3 lockdown lifted The White House lockdown the Secret Service previously ordered was lifted at 11:56 am. Reporters are now allowed back on the North Lawn. Still no word from the White House on what triggered the lockdown. I’ve also reached out to the Secret Service and will pass along what they give me. |

WH in-town pool report #4 cell phone incident Kimberly Halkett of Al Jazeera News — today's foreign press pooler — passed along a comment she got from WH press secretary Karoline Leavitt on the security issue that prompted the Secret Service to order reporters inside the White House: Leavitt: "Somebody threw their phone over the fence," referring to the fence on the north lawn of the White House. |

WH in-town pool report #6 Trump talks to reporters/news on Texas redistricting President Trump walked out of the Oval Office at 12:52 pm. He walked alongside Karoline Leavitt. Trump then came over to reporters and took a wide range of questions for 15 minutes. He made some news, saying he wants Texas to create five new Republican districts during their upcoming state legislature’s redistricting process. He also took questions about inflation rising in June, Pam Bondi and Putin. Quotes to come but here’s an otter link in the meantime. Mairine One lifted off at 1:14 pm. |

WH in-town pool report #7 initial quotes "He shouldn't target Moscow" Below are some quotes from Trump during his gaggle with reporters. This is not the full extent of Trump's remarks – nor is it the full exchange. I will send some additional feeds in upcoming pool reporters. Trump on Pittsburgh visit: "We're going to be touting about numbers like nobody's ever heard before, mostly to do with AI. We have tremendous investments being made, literally trillions of dollars." Trump on Supreme Court decision regarding Department of Education: "We had a big win with the Supreme Court and the Department of Education, and we want – as you know – to bring education back to the states and take the federal government out of it." Trump on his ultimatum to Putin/Russia "At the end of 50 days, if we don't have a deal, it's going to be too bad … The tariffs are going to go on and other sanctions." Should Zelenskyy target Moscow? "No, he shouldn't target Moscow" Are you willing to give long-range missiles to Ukraine as well? "No, we're not looking to do that." Why are you giving Mr. Putin 50 additional days to prosecute his war against Ukraine? "Well, I don't think 50 days is very long. And it could be sooner that that. You should have asked that same question to Biden. Why did he get us into this war?" What's the deal with Indonesia? What are the terms? "We made a deal with Indonesia. I spoke to their really great president …. We have full access to Indonesia. We will pay no tariffs. So they are giving us access into Indonesia, which we've never had." "And the other part is they are going to pay 19%, and we are going to pay nothing." Me: Do you believe your tariffs might have led to inflation increasing last month? Do you believe they had a role in the uptick? "Who do you work for?" (I respond by saying USA TODAY) "They wrote me a beautiful article the other day, so I can't get angry today. Just wrote a very good article about me. What's that all about? So, I can't get angry with you. Very little inflation, as you know, the numbers were very, very good – much inside the margins. So we've had no inflation. All we've had is we're making a fortune." |

WH in-town pool report #8 Quotes on Epstein case, Schiff, Texas redistricting and more Here are more quotes from President Trump's gaggle on the North Lawn before boarding Marine One this afternoon. Check the quotes against the Otter feed I sent earlier – or better yet, check it against video of Trump's gaggle. Here is a link from C-SPAN. Trump touting tariffs: "We have tariffs going on because we want tariffs and we want the money coming into the United States." Are you on Ukraine's side now? "I'm on nobody's side. You know who side I'm on? Humanity's side. I want to stop the killing of thousands of people." Your daughter-in-law said there should be transparency in the Epstein case. Do you agree with her? "The attorney general has handed that very well. She's really done a very good job. I think when you look at it, you'll understand that. I would like to see that also, but the credibility is very import." Did the attorney general tell you that your name appeared in the Epstein files? "No, no. She's given us just a very quick briefing in terms of the credibility of the different things that they've seen. I would say that, you know, these files were made up by Comey. They were made up by Obama. They were made up by the Bidens. And we went through years of that with the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax." On Texas, how many more seats to you want the Republicans to draw? "Five." What if California, New York and Illinois and other blue states (create new Democratic congressional districts)? "Well, that's fine, too, but five – I think we get five. And there could be some other states where we're going to get three or four or five. Texas will be the biggest one." When was the last tine you spoke to Jerome Powell? "When he was in my office." What did you tell him when he was in your office? "I told him he's doing a very bad job. He's way late. That's why I call him "Too Late." Jerome Powell is too late. Are you going to appoint Powell for another term? "You must be kidding? Why would you waste a question like that?" Are you still negotiating with the EU? "We are talking with the EU, and we're making progress. But look, you know, we already have a deal with the EU. It's called the letter that was sent out. I think it was 30%. That's the EU." Trump on Cuomo staying in the NYC mayor's race: "I think he's got a shot," Trump said, declining to say when asked who he prefers who wins. "I think Andrew would have a good shot of winning. You know, he's running against a communist? I would think he would have a good shot." Trump on trip to Scotland: "We're going to be meeting with the British prime minister … probably in Aberdeen … and we're going to also refine the trade deal that we made." He adds that they will probably meet at one of his properties in Scotland. Me: Do you have a message for the EU if they choose to retaliate to your tariffs? "I don't know how they can retaliate, you know. They made a lot of money. They've treated us very badly, but now they're treating us very nicely. I think everybody's going to be happy with the EU." Trump on possibly meeting the pope: "I would do it. I have a lot of respect. I really like his brother … He's MAGA all the way. I like the pope's brother and I think I like the pope." More on Putin: "So far, I've been very disappointed in President Putin. I've solved a lot of wars in the last three months, but I haven't gotten this one yet. This is a Biden war. It's not a Trump war. I'm here to try and get us out of that mess." Trump on Brazil's Bolsonaro: "President Bolsonaro is a good man. I've gotten to know a lot of prime ministers and president, and kings and queens. And I know him, and I'm pretty good at this. President Bolsonaro is not a dishonest man. He loves the people of Brazil." You said you want Adam Schiff brought to justice. Does that mean jail? "I think Adam Schiff is one of the lowest of the low. He is a dishonest, crooked guy. I don't know about the individual charge, if that even happens. But Adam Schiff is a serious low life." AOC is hosting Zohran Mamdani in Washington tomorrow morning for a breakfast. Were you invited? "I'd really love to go. I mean, I look forward to meeting them both. I know them both really well from what I read and from what I see. Look, he's a communist. I don't think our country is ready for a communist, but we're going to see. And I don't think that race is over yet, either." "AOC, look. I think she's very nice. But she's very low IQ. And we really don't need IQ. Between here and Crockett, we're going to give them both an IQ test to see who comes out best." Trump started to walk toward Marine One at this point … but then he returned to a different section of the line of reporters and took a couple of more questions. Thanks to Emily Goodin of the Daily Mail for the Otter of the side gaggle. Trump on alleged mortgage fraud from Schiff: "I think the thing with Adam Schiff is very serious. And I think what they have on Leticia James is very serious, right? But I have to leave that up to the district attorneys and the prosecutors and to the attorney general, most importantly." "Adam Schiff is a low life. He deserves what he gets." Have you spoken to Putin since the announcement yesterday? "I have not." |

WH in-town pool report #9 Rose Garden renovation During Trump’s WH departure, I snapped a photo of the ongoing renovations of the Rose Garden. I know there’s a lot of interest in this project, so I’m passing along the photo so you can see the latest. Various WH officials — as mentioned in pool report #6 — were surveying the renovation work before Trump departed. |

WH in-town pool report #10 Secret Service statement Neither Peter Navarro nor Stephen Miller took questions from reporters outside after doing television hits on Pebble Beach. Meanwhile, the Secret Service sent out the following statement regarding the brief White House lockdown earlier today. (Hat tip to Christian Datoc of the Washington Examiner for the heads up.) From the agency: Please see our statement below, attributable to a U.S. Secret Service spokesperson: At approximately 11:30 a.m. today, U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division officers responded to an individual who threw an object over the White House fence along Pennsylvania Avenue. As a precaution, officers cleared the North Grounds, Pennsylvania Avenue and Lafayette Park. A military Explosive Ordinance Disposal team responded to the scene and cleared the object. One individual was transported to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation. All road closures have been lifted. |

WH in-town pool report #12 Trump back at WH, no gaggle Marine One landed on the White House south lawn at 7:09 pm. President Trump walked off the helicopter at 7:12 pm. Trump waved at reporters, acknowledged the new American flag on the south lawn and did not come over to reporters to take questions. Your pool reporter shouted one question at Trump — why did you pull national guard troops from Los Angeles? — but Trump did not respond. A couple other questions were also shouted but I could not make them out. After Trump entered the WH, Karoline Leavitt, Doug Burgum and Margo Martin came off Marine One and followed the present into the White House. POTOS is now back in the White House following his trip to Pittsburgh this afternoon. |

As the motorcade entered campus, a handful of onlookers flashed thumbs down and flipped the bird. One protestor had a sign reading "Our gender isn't your culture war, our city isn't your PR stunt." Sen. McCormick was introduced at 330. Also spotted in the crowd: Former Sen. Rob Portman. After the Beach Boys' "I Get Around" faded out, "Hail to the Chief" came on and POTUS entered at 3:33pm. Sen. McCormick said that he was with POTUS in Butler, PA roughly a year ago, where he survived an assassination attempt, and " I witnessed your strength, your courage on that day and beyond." He shouted out Trump's America-first energy policy, telling him "You're making our country energy dominant, supporting workers at every level. POTUS began speaking at 3:38pm. "I went to school here, to college here, and got to know it very well." POTUS said that at that rally, right before he was shot at, he'd called McCormick to the stage, before changing his mind and telling him to hold on. "If you would have come up I don't know what the hell would have happened, right?" POTUS said. "We have the hottest country, and we're going to keep it that way." Shouts out Secs. Travel pool 9: More shout-outs from POTUS speech Among POTUS's many shout-outs of those onstage was David Sacks. Says he met him during the last campaign, and said to himself "If I pull this sucker off" in the campaign, he'd hire Sacks. Shouts out PA State Sen. Kim Ward, Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman, state Sen. Greg Roth as well. Starts to shout out GOP PA congressmen. "Oh they're in Washington, working on our next bill? Good, they shouldn't be here!" Then lists them off anyways. Trump announces "More than $56 million in new energy infrastructure" and a "$36 million in new data center project, and a lot more than that, I'm going to announce in the coming weeks." After criticizing "Deface the Nation," he shouts out a pair of reporters. "We have a great woman here, Salena Zito, who writes about the Rust Belts and the Midwest," has her stand up in the back and wave. Also shouts out "Ms. McAdams," Alexis McAdams, from Fox News. Says he has interviews set up with both right after this speech. "I think we have a true golden age for America. ... you're going to see some real action here, so get ready. Lots of jobs, lots of success." Opens the floor up for those flanking him to talk at 4:05pm. |

McCormick says they'll look back on this day as a "seminal moment" for the state. POTUS: "You're going to have tremendous success in teh commonwealth. So good luck to everybody." "I don't understand why the Jeffrey Epstein case would be interesting to anybody." Why give Putin another 50 days on Ukraine? Says Putin may change his mind "rapidly." "He says he wants peace." On secondary tariffs on Russia potential hiring Americans: "I don't think so." Predicts they won't need to be implemented. Progress on Iran? "They want to talk. I'm in no rush to talk. ... They have to pick a different mountain" it was so damaged. He declined to say which other states he wants Republicans to redraw congressional lines besides Texas, says there are "about four of them" but declined to name them. "I'll let you figure that one out." Says pharmaceutical tariffs will begin "probably at the end of the month." Says they'll begin low and gradually rise. |

Travel pool 16: More POTUS (Bessent to Fed, thoughts on firing Powell, fuller Epstein) Sorry Powell wasn't in the last report, couldn't hear him well enough to understand POTUS' response in real time. Here's that q, Bessent, q on crypto, and fuller quote on Epstein. On Powell: "The one thing I wouldn't have guessed is he would be spending two and a half million dollars to build a little extension onto the fed." Q: Is it fireable offense? "I think it sort of is, because if you look at his testimony... he's not talking about the problem. It's a big problem." On whether Bessent would be his number-one option for the next Fed chairman: On whether he was frustrated crypto legislation stalled in the House today: "No. The interesting thing is the 12 votes were votes where they wanted it to be stronger in terms of crypto people. ... those negative votes were because they wanted it to be, the safeguards, they wanted it to be stronger for people with crypto." Fuller quote: When asked why he thinks some of his supporters are so interested in the Epstein story and so upset about how it's been handled: Thanks to WSJ's Brian Schwartz for the help spotting VIPs at the Pittsburgh event. Signing off—have a good night, everyone! |
