Dear Mr. President:
I learned with deep regret of your resignation, although I appreciate the reasons for your decision. We Americans have come to know and admire you as a good friend and trusted ally. Your devotion to the principles of peace and social justice and your gallant struggle with affliction will remain an inspiration to us all.
Mrs. Johnson joins me in hoping that you will enjoy a quick and complete recovery.
