ICYMI: Vice President Kamala Harris Joins "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" for Wide-Ranging Interview

June 06, 2024

During a national TV interview with Jimmy Kimmel, the Vice President discussed recent attacks on reproductive freedom, efforts to expand access to health care, marijuana reform, standing with Ukraine, and the Biden-Harris Administration's record of delivering for the American people

WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris joined Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday night for a wide-ranging conversation about her continued leadership in the fight for reproductive freedom, ongoing threats to health care, marijuana reform, and our continued support for Ukraine against Russia's unprovoked attack. She also spoke about immigration and outlined how the Biden-Harris Administration has delivered historic progress for families throughout America – from capping the cost of insulin at $35 a month for seniors to canceling student debt and taking on the burden of medical debt.

ICYMI, here are five top moments from Tuesday night's interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!:

1. Vice President Harris continued her leadership in the fight for reproductive freedoms while speaking about attacks on access to contraception, IVF, and abortion.

"In state after state, laws have been passed to criminalize doctors and nurses. There's a state that provides for prison for life for a doctor administering care – state after state making no exception for rape or incest. And the idea that these laws would make no exception even for a survivor of a violation to their body, and to tell that woman, that person, "You don't have a right to make a decision about what happens to your body next," it's immoral. And I think most of us agree one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government should not be telling her what to do with her body."

"Contraception could very much be at risk, and it is at risk. And let's understand moving forward: Not only is that at risk, look at IVF and what has happened and how clinics have closed because of fear that they may be violating the law to provide IVF treatment. What is happening in terms of those who are basically calling for a national abortion ban."

2. The Vice President also called out attacks on the Affordable Care Act while outlining how she and President Biden have expanded access to health care.

"The previous president…when he was president, supported and fanned the flames of at least 60 attempts to undo the Affordable Care Act. Let's remember what the Affordable Care Act did. Among many things, it said a preexisting health condition cannot be the basis of a health insurance company denying you coverage…I've traveled throughout our country, and the American people know that access to health care should be a right and not just a privilege of those who can afford it."

3. The Vice President outlined what the Biden-Harris Administration has done to deliver marijuana reform – from pardons for simple marijuana possession to taking a critical step towards rescheduling marijuana.

"People shouldn't have to go to jail for smoking weed…we've pardoned a number of people. You know, I think it's interesting also: remember, there was a time when people would say, "Well, marijuana is a gateway drug." These were failed policies. Right? The resources should be better directed and will be better directed to deal with opioid addiction and what we need to do around fentanyl, getting more resources into mental health and mental health care. That's the smarter way."

4. The Vice President continued her leadership on the world stage and reiterated the Administration's commitment to stand with Ukraine and uphold international rules and norms.

"I'm actually going to Switzerland soon for the peace conference with Zelenskyy and about what's happening in Ukraine. America has a responsibility to uphold and protect not only what we care about in terms of our ideals as a nation but international rules and norms, one of the most important being the international rule and norm around sovereignty and territorial integrity.…I've now, as Vice President, met over 150 world leaders – presidents, prime ministers, chancellors, and kings -- many of them multiple times. And they look to the United States to be a standard bearer. And anyone in the United States Congress who is playing political games with this is really doing so at our collective peril in terms of our standing and what we stand for as Americans."

5. Vice President Harris called out Congressional Republicans for blocking the bipartisan border bill, and highlighted how she and President Biden continue working to fix the broken immigration system.

"On day one, when we came into office, we offered as the first bill, a comprehensive pathway for citizenship including taking care of our DREAMers, fixing the broken aspects of the system, including what we need to do to reinforce security at the border. And they didn't take it up. So, then, there was a bipartisan group that included some of the most conservative senators in the United States Senate who came together with Democrats to resolve some of these issues…Well, the Republicans in Congress got a call from Donald Trump: Don't do the deal…And our point has been very clear: there are solutions at hand, and let's do the right thing."
