Haley Campaign Press Release - Nikki Haley is Tough on Illegal Immigration

September 27, 2023

"Nikki Haley has the experience and determination to secure the border and stop the flow of illegal immigrants and deadly drugs."
– General Don Bolduc

Nikki Haley speaks proudly about being the daughter of legal immigrants and a passionate defender of securing U.S. borders and law and order. As governor, she signed one of the most aggressive anti-illegal immigration laws in the country and fought the Obama/Biden administration on immigration. Haley was the first presidential candidate to visit the southern border and release a plan to secure the border and stop the flow of deadly drugs.

As South Carolina governor, Haley signed one of the toughest immigration laws, making good on her pledge as a gubernatorial candidate.

  • On June 26, 2011, Gov. Nikki Haley signed the South Carolina Illegal Immigration Reform Act, requiring police to check the immigration status of anyone they stop or arrest for another reason and suspect may be in the country illegally. The bill required South Carolina employers to use the federal E-Verify system to check the citizenship status of employees.
  • The Post and Courier called these measures "some of the nation's toughest measures to curb illegal immigrants living and working here."

Haley went head-to-head with the Obama administration on illegal immigration.

  • Haley fought Obama's DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to enforce South Carolina's E-Verify law. Haley took the fight public, calling out the Obama administration until it backed down.
  • South Carolina filed a suit challenging Obama's constitutional authority after he issued an executive order giving temporary legal status to millions of illegal immigrants.
  • Haley fought the Obama administration on accepting Syrian refugees, undocumented minors, and Guantanamo Bay prisoners in South Carolina.

Haley defended U.S. sovereignty with respect to immigration at the UN.

  • In 2017, the U.S. withdrew from the Global Compact on Migration, saying it undermines the nation's sovereignty.
  • Haley: "Our decisions on immigration policies must always be made by Americans and Americans alone. We will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter our country."

Haley visited 400 miles along the southern border and released a comprehensive plan to secure the border in April 2023. Her plan would:

  • Require businesses to use E-Verify in the hiring process, just like she did as governor.
  • Fire Biden's new IRS agents, hire 25,000 new Border Patrol and ICE workers.
  • End handouts for illegal immigrants, including defunding sanctuary cities.
  • End Joe Biden's dangerous catch-and-release and start catch-and-deport.
  • Reinstate remain-in-Mexico and Title 42.
