Haley Campaign Press Release - Nikki Haley: Taking the Chinese Threat Seriously

June 27, 2023

WASHINGTON – Presidential candidate Nikki Haley drew a line in the sand on the future of U.S.-China relations in a major foreign policy speech at the American Enterprise Institute today. She was unapologetic: U.S. policy toward China must undergo fundamental changes to deal with the most dangerous threat America has faced since World War II.

Here's what people are saying...

Reuters: "Former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley staked out one of the most hawkish positions on China in the 2024 Republican presidential field, calling for Washington to drastically limit ties with its geopolitical foe to address a dramatic rise in fentanyl deaths in the United States... Several candidates vying for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination have adopted a confrontational stance toward China, though Haley appears to be upping the ante by putting forth a series of aggressive, specific policy proposals." (Reuters, 6/27/23)

Washington Free Beacon: "Haley, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, painted herself as the most hawkish Republican nominee in the field in a Tuesday foreign policy speech and accused President Joe Biden of kowtowing to the Communist regime... Haley's early focus on China signals that pressing foreign policy challenges could play an outsized role during the campaign season, as Republican nominees seek to set themselves apart from one another." (Washington Free Beacon, 6/27/23)

Politico: "NIKKI HALEY wants you to know that her time in the Oval Office, should she get there, will be defined by her unflinching aggressiveness toward China — in direct contrast to the "moral weakness" that she claims her former boss DONALD TRUMP showed in the White House." (Politico, 6/27/23)

Washington Times: "Nikki Haley on Tuesday called for a 'fundamental shift' in the nation's approach to China and pledged to revoke normal trade relations with the Asian giant in response to human rights abuses and the role they have played in the fentanyl crisis... Ms. Haley said more than 20 years after the U.S. normalized trade relations with China, it is time for a rethink." (Washington Times, 6/27/23)

Daily Caller: "In response to Chinese aggression, Haley argued that the U.S. government should develop new military technologies and speed up procurement. In addition, the U.S. should cultivate military ties with east Asian partners like Japan, South Korea, Australia, India and the Philippines, she added." (Daily Caller, 6/27/23)

Washington Examiner: "Other actions Haley called for included banning Chinese investors from purchasing U.S. land, banning American companies from lobbying on behalf of China, and blocking American companies from selling technology to China." (Washington Examiner, 6/27/23)

NBC News: "These kinds of policy-specific, formal speeches are becoming a pattern for the Haley campaign, with this foreign policy event following a similar format to a speech she gave focused on abortion earlier this spring." (NBC News, 6/27/23)

NewsNation: "The former UN Ambassador and GOP presidential hopeful was flexing her muscles on foreign policy today...she made it clear, she will be tough on China..." (NewsNation, 6/27/23)

Newsweek's Nick Reynolds: "Speaking at @AEI today, @NikkiHaley throwing down the gauntlet on China: criticizes Trump and Biden on their policies, and proposing tougher sanctions in response to fentanyl crisis. 'If China wants to start normal trade again, it will stop killing Americans.'" (Twitter, 6/27/23)
