Haley Campaign Press Release - Haley Condemns UN Human Rights Council as "An Organization That Is Not Worthy of Its Name"

October 10, 2023

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Presidential candidate Nikki Haley called out the United Nations General Assembly for reelecting China and Cuba to the UN Human Rights Council. These countries are run by dictators who oppress and kill their own people. Communist China operates concentration camps for its Uyghur population and has stamped out every ounce of freedom in Hong Kong. Cuba is a communist prison that kills and tortures political dissidents and anyone who is viewed as a threat to the ruling regime. China won 80% of the vote and Cuba won 76%. The Russian human rights atrocities were too egregious for even the UN. Russia lost its bid with 43%.

The UN Human Rights Council is home to some of the world's least free and most violent countries. In 2023, only 30% of the countries on the Council were classified as "free." As UN Ambassador, Haley led the charge to withdraw the United States from the UN Human Rights Council. Joe Biden rejoined the inhumane Council.

This farce comes on the heels of the UN Human Rights Council's offensive statement on Hamas' war against Israel, in which UN Commissioner Volker Türk lumped Israel and Hamas together and called for defusing the "powder keg." Türk's lengthy statement did not mention the word "terrorist" once, referring to Hamas murderers as "Palestinian armed groups."

"The UN Human Rights Council is a farce," said Nikki Haley. "I saw it firsthand as Ambassador, and today is further proof. China and Cuba are some of the worst human rights abusers in the world, and today they won reelection to an entity that is supposed to protect human rights. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the UN Human Rights Council is a sham and an organization that is not worthy of its name."
