Executive Order 9704—Functions of the American Battle Monuments Commission

March 14, 1946

By virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Statues, including Title I of the First War Powers Act, 1941, and as President of the United States and Commander in Chief of the Army and the Navy, it is hereby ordered that the American Battle Monuments Commission shall control as to materials and design, and provide regulations for and supervise the erection of, all memorial monuments and buildings in American cemeteries located outside of the United States and its territories and possessions, and shall also, when authorized by any foreign country or political subdivision thereof in which the American armed forces have served, control as to materials and design, and provide regulations for the erection of, all memorial monuments and buildings located in, and commemorating the services of the American armed forces in, any such foreign country or political subdivision.
