Department of Labor Nomination of Janet L. Norwood To Be Commissioner of Labor Statistics.

The President today announced that he will nominate Janet L. Norwood, of Bethesda, Md., to be Commissioner of Labor Statistics at the Labor Department. She would replace the late Julius Shiskin.

Norwood has been serving as Acting Commissioner of Labor Statistics since April 1978.

She was born December 11, 1923, in Newark, N.J. She received a B.A. from Douglass College, Rutgers University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Tufts University.

Norwood has been with the Bureau of Labor Statistics since 1963, beginning as an economist in the Office of Foreign Labor and Trade. She has also served as chief of the Division of Consumer Prices and Price Indexes and as Deputy Commissioner for Data Analysis. She is the author of numerous articles in professional journals on statistics and labor law.
