The President today announced his intention to nominate Matthew Nimetz as Under Secretary of State for Security Assistance, Science and Technology. He would replace Lucy Wilson Benson, who has resigned.
Nimetz has been Counselor of the Department of State since 1977.
He was born June 17, 1939, in New York City. He received a B.A. from Williams College in 1960, a B.A. (1962) and M.A. (1966) from Balliol College, Oxford University, and an LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1965.
From 1965 to 1967, Nimetz was law clerk to Justice John M. Harland of the U.S. Supreme Court. From 1967 to 1969, he was a staff assistant to President Johnson. From 1969 to 1971 and 1972 to 1977, he was with the New York City firm of Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett. From 1975 to 1977, he also served as a commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and as a member of the New York State Health Advisory Council.
