Special Message

January 10, 1870

To the Senate of the United States.

I transmit to the Senate, for consideration with a view to its ratification, a treaty for the annexation of the Dominican Republic to the United States, signed by the plenipotentiaries of the parties on the 29th of November last.

U. S. GRANT.

APP NOTE:  In many documents of the period, the Dominican Republic is alternatively referred to as San Domingo or Santo Domingo. The treaty language may be found in Department of State, Report of the Secretary of State in Regard to San Domingo, Transmitted to the Senate January 16, 1871, starting page 98.
