National Security Advisor Susan E. Rice met on June 16 with Foreign Minister K. Shanmugam of Singapore at the White House. Ambassador Rice congratulated Foreign Minister Shanmugam on the 50th anniversary of Singapore's independence, and the two leaders noted the strong state of the bilateral relationship during this 10th anniversary year of the U.S.-Singapore Strategic Framework Agreement. Ambassador Rice and Foreign Minister Shanmugam discussed the strategic and economic importance of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) for both countries and the imperative of continued U.S. leadership in the Asia-Pacific region. They also discussed the strong U.S.-Singapore cooperation in addressing regional and global challenges, including by working to lower tensions in the South China Sea, confronting ISIL, and the Global Health Security Agenda.
