Press Release - President Bush Presents the 2004 Arts & Humanities Medals

President George W. Bush today announced the National Medal of Arts recipients and National Humanities Medal recipients for 2004. The awards were presented by the President in an Oval Office ceremony this afternoon. The President was joined by First Lady Laura Bush, Mrs. Lynne Cheney, Dana Gioia, Chairman, National Endowment for the Arts and Bruce Cole, Chairman, National Endowment for the Humanities.

National Endowment for the Arts Award Recipients:

Anne Tatlock, Chairman of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will accept the award on behalf of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Arts Patron -- New York, NY

Ray Bradbury, Author - Waukegan, IL

Carlisle Floyd, Opera Composer - Latta, SC

Lindy Hart will accept the award on behalf of her late husband Frederick "Rick" Hart, Sculptor -- Atlanta, GA

Helen Hecht will accept the award on behalf of her late husband Anthony Hecht, Poet -- New York, NY

John Ruthven, Wildlife Artist - Cincinnati, OH

Vincent Scully, Architectural Historian - New Haven, CT

Twyla Tharp, Dancer, Producer, Choreographer - Portland, IN

National Endowment for the Humanities Award Recipients:

Marva Collins, Educator - Chicago, IL

Gertrude Himmelfarb, Author - New York, NY

Hilton Kramer, Author, Art Critic - Gloucester, MA

Charlotte Jones will accept the award on behalf of her grandmother Madeleine L'Engle, Author - New York, NY

Harvey Mansfield, Professor of Government - New Haven, CT

John Searle, Philosopher - Berkley, CA

Shelby Steele, Racial Scholar - Chicago, IL
