Nomination of John H. Kelly To Be an Assistant Secretary of State

The President today announced his intention to nominate John H. Kelly to be an Assistant Secretary of State (Near East and South Asian Affairs). He would succeed Richard W. Murphy.

Since 1988 Ambassador Kelly has been the principal deputy director of the policy planning staff at the Department of State. Prior to this he was the United States Ambassador to Lebanon, 1986 - 1988. Ambassador Kelly has held several positions at the Department of State since 1964, including Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs, 1983 - 1985, and Senior Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, 1982 - 1983.

Ambassador Kelly was born in Atlanta, GA, in 1939. He graduated in 1961 from Emory University with a degree in history. He is married, has one son, and resides in Washington, DC.
