CHARLESTON, S.C. — Democrats are terrified of running against Nikki Haley. Yesterday, a Democrat strategist told NewsNation, "Nikki Haley is the bigger threat. I think Nikki Haley would take us down dramatically, frankly. I worry about Nikki Haley... Joe Biden would lose to Nikki Haley as it stands right now without a doubt in my mind."
Multiple polls show Haley beating Biden by larger margins than either Donald Trump or Ron DeSantis. A poll released today by Echelon Insights shows Haley beating Biden 46%-41%, the only candidate to beat Biden outside the margin of error.
Other polls show the same thing. A CNN poll showed Haley up six points over Biden, while all other Republican candidates were neck-and-neck with him. An NBC News poll showed Haley with a five-point lead while DeSantis was down one and Trump was tied. A Fox News poll echoed these results.
NEWSNATION: So let's just say, Chris, as a Democrat, how would you look at that hypothetically that the field does clear at some point, maybe it's after the Iowa caucus, at some point, and it's Trump versus Haley. As a Democrat, supporting the president, who would you be rooting for? Who's the bigger threat?
DEMOCRAT STRATEGIST: Well, Nikki Haley's the bigger threat. I think Nikki Haley would take us down dramatically, frankly. I worry about Nikki Haley. It's hard to call Nikki Haley crazy. Nikki Haley governed South Carolina, yes, as a conservative, but she was not crazy. And she stood up for things that Democrats care about. And I think she would have cross-partisan appeal, and I think she would really hurt us with Independents.
NEWSNATION: To be clear, Chris, take us down... Take us down dramatically means you think Joe Biden would lose?
DEMOCRAT STRATEGIST: Take the Democratic Party down.
NEWSNATION: So Biden would lose to her, you're saying?
DEMOCRAT STRATEGIST: Yeah, I think Joe Biden would lose to Nikki Haley as it stands right now, without a doubt in my mind. And I worry about it. I don't think Joe Biden could stand up to her.
