THE PRESIDENT of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, has awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Third Oak Leaf Cluster, to

GENERAL JAMES A. VAN FLEET, USA

for exceptionally meritorious service in a duty of great responsibility:

General James A. Van Fleet, United States Army, distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious service to the United States Government and the United Nations in a position of great trust and grave responsibility during the period 14 April 1951 to 11 February 1953. Commanding the Eighth United States Army in Korea and exercising operational control over the forces of the Republic of Korea and those of sixteen United Nations, General Van Fleets outstanding services have been instrumental in furthering the United Nations' resistance to the Communist armed aggression against the peace and freedom of the world.
