Proclamation 3618—American Landmarks Week

September 23, 1964


By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

Whereas the Act of August 21, 1935 (49 Stat. 666), declared that "it is a national policy to preserve for public use historic sites, buildings and objects of national significance for the inspiration and benefit of the people of the United States"; and

Whereas the General Conference of UNESCO at its eleventh session in 1960 adopted a resolution for an International Campaign for Monuments and urged member-nations to take part, in accordance with the national wishes and needs of each country, and subsequently declared the Campaign to run from June through November 1964; and

Whereas the stated aim of the International Campaign for Monuments is to "develop and improve technical and legal measures for the protection, preservation and restoration of cultural property, and for the safeguarding of the beauty and character of the landscape"; and

Whereas the United States, consistent with its traditional principles of conserving the national heritage, will participate wholeheartedly in this Campaign in order to arouse an awareness of the acute need for action to safeguard the richness and diversity of America's architectural, historical, and natural heritage as living history, a vital record and source of inspiration to future generations:

Now, Therefore, I, Lyndon B. Johnson, President of the United States of America, do proclaim the week beginning September 28, 1964, as American Landmarks Week; and I invite all of our Governors, county officials, mayors, and citizens to participate in the observance of this week in, connection with the International Campaign for Monuments.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States of America to be affixed.

DONE at the City of Washington this twenty-third day of September in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and sixty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and eighty-ninth.
