Peace Corps Nomination of William G. Sykes To Be Deputy Director.

The President today announced that he will nominate William G. Sykes, of Baltimore, Md., to be Deputy Director of the Peace Corps. He would replace Thomas Houser, resigned.

Sykes is deputy secretary of the Maryland Department of Human Resources.

He was born December 5, 1926, in Halifax, Va. He received a B.S. from Hampton Institute in 1956 and an M.S.W. from Howard University in 1962. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1957.

From 1957 to 1960, Sykes was a caseworker for the city of Baltimore, and from 1960 to 1961, he was a probation officer for the criminal division of the Supreme Bench of Baltimore. From 1961 to 1964, he was a school social worker for the Baltimore City Department of Education.

From 1964 to 1966, Sykes was project supervisor for the Baltimore Youth Services Project of the National Committee for Children and Youth. From 1966 to 1967, he was training director for the National Committee for Children and Youth. He was chief social worker for the Baltimore City Health Department in 1967 and 1968.

Sykes was with the Baltimore Model Cities Agency from 1968 to 1973, as health coordinator, acting director, and then director. From 1973 to 1975, he was assistant to the mayor of Baltimore and director of the mayor's Office of Human Resources. He has been deputy secretary of the Maryland Department of Human Resources since 1975.
