Message to President Gaston Doumergue of France on the Death of Marshal Joseph Joffre.

I AM DISTRESSED by the news of the death of Marshal Joffre who is so affectionately remembered by the American people. Both in their name and personally I wish to express to Your Excellency the deep sorrow which is felt in this country at the passing of this great patriot.

Note: Joseph Joffre served as commander in chief of the French Army from August 5, 1913, to December 13, 1916, when he became Marshal of the French Army and technical adviser to the French Government regarding World War I.
