Dear Mr. Justice Fortas:

My dear Mr. President:

For the reasons expressed in a letter of this date which I have written to the Chief Justice, a copy of which, with his permission, I enclose, I wish hereby to tender my resignation as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, which, with your approval, will be effective as of this date.

I have appreciated the opportunity to serve the country and the Court during these past years as an Associate Justice.
Very truly yours,
