CITATION FOR THE LEGION OF MERIT

DEGREE OF COMMANDER

ADMIRAL OF THE FLEET Sir James Fownes Somerville, GCB, KBE, DSO, Royal Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Head of the British Admiralty Delegation in Washington, D.C., from October 28, 1944 to September 25, 1945. Throughout this critical period of war, Admiral of the Fleet Somerville, by his astute judgment and comprehensive knowledge of the grand global strategy involved, rendered invaluable assistance in achieving close cooperation between the United States and British Navies in vital naval operations against the common enemy and his brilliant professional ability and tireless devotion to the fulfillment of his important task were vital factors in the ultimate success of Allied forces over all enemy opposition.
