Announcement of Appointment of Leonard Garment as U.S. Representative on the Human Rights Commission of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations

The President today announced the appointment of Leonard Garment, of Brooklyn, N.Y., as Representative of the United States of America, on the Human Rights Commission of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. He succeeds Philip E. Hoffman, who is resigning effective upon a date to be determined.

Since January, Mr. Garment has been in the private practice of law in the firm of Trubin, Sillcocks, Edelman and Knapp, and counsel to the firm of Ruckelshaus, Beveridge, Fairbanks and Diamond, of New York, N.Y. He joined the White House staff in 1969, as Special Consultant to the President. He became Acting Counsel in April of 1973, while still retaining his position as Special Consultant and later became Assistant to the President in January 1974, serving until December 1974. He was a member of the law firm of Mudge, Rose, Guthrie, and Alexander from 1949 to 1969.

Mr. Garment was born on May 11, 1924, in New York, N.Y., and attended Brooklyn College. He received his LL.B. degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1949.

Mr. Garment is married to the former Grace Albert, and they have two children. They reside in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y.
