TONKIN GULF RESOLUTION PASSED BY CONGRESS
August 7th, 1964

A sweeping resolution was overwhelmingly approved by Congress today giving President Lyndon Baines Johnson authority to "take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression."

The resolution came after it was reported that three North Vietnamese PT boats fired torpedoes at a U.S. destroyer in international waters. President Johnson has promised to order retaliatory actions at once.

The resolutions were approved 88 to 2 in the Senate and 416 to 0 in the House of Representatives.
