VPOTUS pool report 1 - hotel depart

Good morning from Jakarta.

At 9:50 the VP's motorcade is headed out toward the Merdeka Palace for the meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi.

The motorcade sped through the city center, which was emptied of the usual heavy traffic. Hundreds of vehicles could be seen waiting on the each of the side streets for the motorcade to pass.

Along a main palm-lined boulevard, we flashed past a stream of government buildings and embassies, including the Japanese embassy and the ministry of transportation.

At 9:57 the press van peeled away from the motorcade toward the main gate of the palace, which prompted guards to try and close the gates.

A sprint from the vans ensued, to the delight and bewilderment of a couple of hundred school kids dressed in brightly colored regional dress from across the vast Indonesian archipelago.

After that dignified entrance, your pool caught President Joko Widodo greet the Pence family, before entering the white washed Palladian-style building.

The VPOTUS remarked that it was the most beautiful welcome he'd seen, breathtaking.

Inside in a large function room with three ornate chandeliers and a vast red rug, VPOTUS and Mrs Pence signed a guest book before disappearing deeper into the building.

Your pool then rushed round to the other side of the palace to a large grassy courtyard, where the VP and Jokowi could be seen sitting together on a sofa on a soaring veranda drinking what looked to be tea or a cup of java.

Your pool is now awaiting joint statements.
